Amy Dowden appeared emotional as she marked a year since sharing news with words she only ‘dreamed of’ being able to say following her cancer diagnosis.
The Strictly Come Dancing star bravely underwent treatment for breast cancer in 2023 after discovering a lump in her left breast. She had a mastectomy and several rounds of chemotherapy treatment before ringing the bell to signal the end of that part of her journey.
Amy has since been dedicated to raising awareness to encourage others to check their chests like she did and was recently formally made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE ) for services to fundraising and raising awareness of inflammatory bowel disease after speaking about her own Chron’s a number of years ago.
It was then last February that Amy confirmed she’d been told scans showed ‘no evidence of disease’ and despite still needing to visit the hospital monthly for an injection due to the cancer type, Amy made a triumphant return to her beloved dancing and to the Strictly ballroom.
But it was that announcement that Amy was looking back on. Resharing the post to her Instagram Story on Monday (February 24), the 35-year-old said: “One year ago today I shared this news,” alongside a string of face holding back tears emojis and pink hearts and bows.
Amy then added: “Please remember to check your chest!” before sharing a link to her BBC documentary, Amy Dowden: Cancer and Me, which was released last year to huge praise and support.
It comes after Amy marked World Cancer Day by sharing an emotional message to her fellow survivors and fighters. Alongside pictures of her taken throughout treatment, the dancer said earlier in February: “WORLD CANCER DAY supporting those living with cancer, those supporting their loved one’s affected by cancer, admiring the survivors, honoring those we have lost, and never, ever GIVING UP.
“Please check yourself and if you notice any changes with your body or how you feel please book an apt with your GP! Forever grateful to the Drs, nurses, paramedics, NHS, researchers, volunteers, charities and to all those individuals who have helped and supported me!
“Since those words in 2023, sorry Amy it’s cancer, my life will never be the same. But I’m So grateful to those above who saved me, made me stronger and even more determined! Welsh love to all those affected by cancer especially those finding today tough! #worldcancerday #mycancerjourney.”
