Australia’s women have suffered a 34-10 semifinal loss to New Zealand to end their title hopes in the SVNS world series tournament in Vancouver.

The Australians never recovered after conceding two tries in the opening two minutes to New Zealand’s cross-code star Stacey Waaka, the former rugby league international who has also represented her nation in 15-a-side union.

The top-ranked New Zealanders went on an early rampage against the Australians, who were never in the hunt after trailing 24-5 at half-time.

Charlotte Caslick scored Australia’s sole try in the opening half, and Faith Nathan crossed for a second-half consolation try.

The Australians had no answers for the slick Kiwis, who produced a powerhouse display to confirm their title favouritism.

Led by dual Olympic gold medallist Waaka, who finished with three tries, and a two-try display from speedster Risi Pouri-Lane, the Black Ferns cruised into the final, where they will meet the winner of the other semifinal between Japan and Fiji.

Australia will play the loser of the Japan-Fiji fixture for the bronze medal.
